"There are sounds and notes in some of my recordings that I never knew were there!" Steve L. South Attleboro, MA about the SB-4 subwoofer.
A subwoofer is used in most Home theater systems and with Ohm's satellites in music systems. The Ohm SATs require a subwoofer to acheive full range performance.
Ohm has one basic satellite: the SAT-3. It is used with the appropriate subwoofer (room size dependent) to play at live levels in home listening rooms. The satellites come in real wood veneers: walnut, oak, black or white, plus custom veneers. The 3 piece systems run from $975 for small rooms to $1750 for large rooms in the basic veneers. Matching shielded center channel speakers or conventional and true dipole speakers for rear or side use are also available. The Walsh SAT (a 9"x9"x41" tower) or MicroWalsh (6" x 6" x 36"towers) can be used with these subwoofers for the Walsh sound from a small package.

Your large room can be filled with spectacular movie effects and concert level music reproduction with 5 SAT-3s (left, center, right and rear/side) with an SB-5.2 up front and a SB-3.2 in the rear. $3.700 for Ohm's highest output Subwoofer/Satellite system. |
With the Ohm Subwoofer/Satellite Group you enjoy:
* Inconspicuous small speakers with big sound from the subwoofer, * Natural sonic quality that makes music come alive in your room, * Designs for Dolby Digital (AC-3) and DTS home theater systems. * Full Room Stereo: a precise soundscape from most listening positions, * Real wood veneers to match your decor and * Passive or Hybrid Subwoofers to fill small, medium and large rooms with live sound levels
Ohm's experience pays off with better, more accurate and more natural sound reproduction. Ohm has been building subwoofer/satellite systems for longer than most companies have been making speakers. Our first system was introduced in 1976 to rave reviews. We are now on our third generation; building on what we learned from the earlier models.
The heart of the latest systems is the small Ohm SAT-3 satellite. They combine with a powerful subwoofer for high-end, audiophile sound quality with flexible and inconspicuous placement options for 3-D Ohm Theater Systems for Music and Film. They were designed specifically for the most elaborate, six-channel (5.1) Dolby Digital or DTS system; but they also work equally well in the simplest, two channel audiophile music system. The Ohm SAT-3 reproduces the sound spectrum from below the lowest human voices (80Hz) to beyond the highest treble that CDs can provide (20,000Hz).
Their 6.5" woofers can go this deep and still play at live sound levels. Anything smaller can't even fill a medium sized room or has a crossover in the voice range -- making speech very unnatural sounding: like boxes, not people. To make a woofer this large fit into our tiny cabinet required some tight tolerances. The woofer's frame actually extends into the side of the cabinet and part of the tweeters frame is behind the woofer! With the tweeter mounted mostly above the cabinet in the open air, baffle coloration is eliminated.
The cabinets are not traditional rectangular boxes. Instead, they aim the sound at a 45 degree angle, cross-firing in front of the main listening area. This creates a very wide Sweet-Sweep that we call Full Room Stereo. This also allows for a flat frequency response at the typical listening area and a flat energy response so the sound is consistent throughout the room. Additionally, this configuration synchronizes the woofer and tweeter in time; and with a phase coherent crossover, produces Wave Form Fidelity - the acoustical output waveform matches the electrical input. You hear just what was recorded. This gives a naturalness, clarity and intelligibility needed to optimize the benefits of Full Room Stereo.
In fact, the SAT-3s create such an effective Full Room Stereo that no center channel speaker is required to achieve astonishingly real Home Theater in many rooms! But, we do make shielded center channel versions for the typical applications (both wall mounting and TV top versions are available). We also make a rear/side, wall mounted version so you can have identically matched speakers on all five (or more) channels. These satellites and any of our three subwoofers integrate tightly to make one, seamless loudspeaker system.
Ohm offers one active and two hybrid subwoofers, all of which match to our SAT-3s perfectly. The smallest subwoofer, the SB-M, is designed primarily for music (or rear channel use) and is ideal for small to medium sized rooms.
The SB-3.2 produces twice the output to provide exciting movie effects in small and medium sized rooms. It has one passive channel to extend the bass of your center channel speaker to full range.
The largest of the group, the SB-5.2 has a unique design and produces the bass output of a pair of the original $7000 Walsh 5s! It can fill large rooms with dramatic effects and the deepest organ notes. It has three passive channels to extend the bass in three small speaker. It can also extend the bass of the main speakers and provide LFE in two channels. This makes it the only 7 channel subwoofer on the market. With Dolby Digital there is real deep bass in each channel and this is the only subwoofer to reproduce them all.
To use the Low Frequency Effects output (a subwoofer RCA jack), we have power amplifiers in all subwoofers. Having full range speakers in the rear is important with the new DTS and Dolby Digital movies; but it is critical on old Dolby Stereo movies where the rear channel effects' bass is lost with small rear speakers because of the old encoding system. With a regular powered subwoofer, you still need an independent rear subwoofer if you want the full effects. Ohms Hybrid subwoofers give you both in one box.
Ohm also offers two special rear/side speakers for the situation when you need to sit closer to them than to the main speakers. If you sit very close (less than half the distance to your main speakers), the DiPole SATs are for you. They are true dipoles; not omni directional bass and mids crossed over to dipole highs typical of 'dipole' satellites. This makes the sonic balance much more consistent in all directions and the on-axis null much quieter. They are designed for wall mounting and come with a hinged mounting system that allows you to aim the null at the listening area. This permits you to sit within a couple feet, enjoy dramatic sound effects and not have them blasting in your ear. If you sit further away, our SAT-1 can be aimed to give you the balance of direct sound and reflected sound to maximize the effects and maintain the sonic balance. We do recommend using a separate subwoofer (or the passive sections of our hybrid subwoofers) with the rear channel satellites. In our experience, the low frequency information in the rear is critical to many movie effects and hall ambiance on music.
A 3D Home Theater System for Music and Film, with small inconspicuous speakers, can be designed for your specific room with the Ohm Subwoofer/Satellite Group. The satellites are available in real oak and walnut veneer as well as black or white to match your room -- custom wood finishes are optional extras. The Subwoofers come in Stealth Black with custom wood finishes on the SB-3.2 & SB-5.2 as optional extras.
